Top brands with the most powerful presence on social media

Which brands dominate the social media landscape? To answer this question, our social media agency analyzed the recent rankings published by Visibrain. This study also reveals the social media strategies implemented by these leading brands to maximize their influence and brand awareness. In short, plenty of inspiration to be found!

Top 10 most influential brands on social media

Which brands have the greatest impact on the social media landscape? That's the question Visibrain asked itself. In a recent study, the specialized monitoring tool analyzed the influence and digital reputation of the 30 international brands based on data collected between January and September 2022.

Unsurprisingly, it appears that the most successful brands on social networks are those embodied by the giants commonly known as GAFAM (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft). 

The ranking of the most influential brands on social mediaalso includes big names in the luxury like Louis Vuitton and Chanel, but also, more surprisingly, automotive brands like BMW and Tesla. And yes, this is one of the key findings of the study: more than ever, car manufacturers have every reason to invest in social media! 

If we consider pure influence, meaning the average engagement generated (number of interactions on each post), Instagram is the most influential brand with over 120,000 interactions per post on average. Rounding out the top three is Apple (73,080 interactions), followed by BMW (39,213 interactions per post), the only non-American brand in the top five.

Here are the top 10 most influential brands on social media in terms of number of interactions:

  1. Instagram: 120,611 interactions per post on average,
  2. Apple: 73,080 interactions
  3. BMW: 39,213 interactions
  4. Tesla: 38,154 interactions
  5. Disney: 29,898 interactions
  6. Louis Vuitton: 27,132 interactions
  7. Nike: 26,698 interactions
  8. Mercedes-Benz: 15,065 interactions
  9. Chanel: 14,312 interactions
  10. YouTube: 10,571 interactions

Top 10 brands with the highest brand awareness on social media

In addition to influence, the study also examined the brand awareness of these brands. To do this, it measured the volume of posts mentioning the brands from this ranking on Twitter.  

In this ranking, YouTube is the most talked-about brand, with 920 million posts about it between January and July 2022. Instagram and Amazon rank second and third among the most talked-about brands, with 341 million and 246 million posts respectively.

Here are the top 10 brands with the highest brand awareness on social media :

  1. YouTube: 919.7 million posts mentioning the brand on Twitter
  2. Instagram: 340.9 million posts
  3. Amazon: 246.4 million posts
  4. Google: 125.2 million posts
  5. Facebook: 108.8 million posts
  6. Apple: 92.9 million posts
  7. Disney: 42.8 million posts
  8. Tesla: 15.6 million posts
  9. Samsung: 15.4 million posts
  10. Coca-Cola: 15.2 million posts

What are the social media strategies of the most powerful brands?

Beyond rankings of the best-performing brands on social media, let's now look at the strategies they use to stand out.

First, it's worth noting that 100% of the brands analyzed are present on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, while 80% (24 out of 30 brands) are present on TikTok. Regarding TikTok, it's highly likely that this figure will increase further given the popularity of the Chinese platform and, especially, its relatively recent creation date (2016) compared to the others.

To boost their influence, leading brands know how to surround themselves with the right influencers. They are also experts in the art of leveraging highly popular and unifying events such as major sporting competitions (Super Bowl, X-Games, etc.).

When it comes to content creation, brands also know how to use the right formats. Popularized by TikTok and then Instagram (Reels), snack -videos (short videos) are particularly prized for their effectiveness with their communities. One statistic to remember illustrates this: 73% of posts published by Instagram on social media are videos!
